Today I had to pay my vehicle registration fee. Of all the government taxes and surcharges, this one irks me the most. Why? I paid sales tax when I bought my car. I paid a tax when I had the title transferred to my name. I pay a tax every time I fill my car up with gas. I pay tax every time I take it in for an oil change/service appointment. And, now, every year, I pay around $100 just so that I can… continue owning my car and paying sales tax on everything I have to do to maintain it?

Now, I get that the registration tax funds, in part, state road maintenance, emergency services and the like. I just prefer they be more up-front and honest about it. Instead of calling it a “Vehicle Registration Fee,” why not call it a “Hey, You-Use-the-Road-So-You-Should-Help-Maintain-It Fee,” or perhaps a “Do-You-Want-Us-To-Show-Up-When-You-Dial-911? Fee?”

A little more honesty, that’s all I’m asking for, here.
