Heart Check

December 6, 2009

I have never really been bothered by the commercialism Christmas.  I have come to accept the fact that people who have absolutely no belief in Christ – whether it is a belief in Him as their Savior, or that He didn’t exist in the first place – celebrate Christmas.  Yet, for some reason, it has really bothered me this year.  I hear people at work talking about their Christmas plans and various gift-giving events – people who I know are complete atheists, based on conversations we’ve had – and I cringe.  I get frustrated, even angry.

At first I thought this was a righteous anger.  You know, feeling the jealousy of God for the significance of His sacrifice.  But yesterday I realized this wasn’t the case.  If my heart were in the right place, I would rejoice in the incredible opportunity to show people the meaning of Christmas – the coming of the One who would take the sins of the world upon Himself.  I would seize the opportunity to start conversations and invite folks to my church’s Christmas services.  But, have I done any of this?  Nope.

So, what do you guys think?  How do you feel about non-Christians celebrating Christmas?
