Lottery

August 25, 2009

Warning: the views expressed below are hippie liberal in nature, and do not reflect the views of this site.  Oh, wait, they do.

If you live in a state that participates in the PowerBall lottery game, you’ve likely seen the company’s billboards around town.  You know, the ones that have an electronic number displaying the week’s prize followed by a cheesy phrase like “reasons to stick your toes in the sand.”  Recently the jackpot was up to something in the ballpark of $230 million, and that got me thinking:  we often complain about not having enough money to donate to organizations trying to resolve world hunger, the AIDS pandemic and disaster relief, yet we have the money to throw at the lottery?

I did a little research.  The PowerBall game as we know it began in 1997.  The average beginning jackpot is $10 million, all funded by purchasers of PowerBall tickets in the participating states.  Numbers are drawn on Sunday and Wednesday.  That means that twice each week the lottery is paying out at least $10 million (if you average out the days that no winning ticket is purchased and the jackpot rolls over to the next drawing date).  Twice per week for 12 years.  1248 drawings.  That means that the people who supposedly don’t have any money to donate to help make our world a better place have paid $12,480,000,000 in something as ridiculous as the lottery.  And that’s just the PowerBall.  There are countless other lottery games in virtually every first-world country on earth.

12,480,000,000 reasons to stop wasting our money and start helping those in need.

I’m hardly a hippie liberal, very opposite in fact, but that makes a lot of sense. What if even HALF that was donated would be given to world relief charities and half to the “game” of the lottery. That way you can still have a chance of winning something AND feel good about throwing your money away when you loose….as it wouldn’t really be throwing it away!
